Seven Questions – Are You A Television Junkie?

Television Remote control

Many people don’t think they’re addicted to television until they take an in-depth look into their television schedule.

Here are a few questions to consider while deciding if you have a TV addiction problem:

  1. Do you watch a great deal of TV (over 3-5 hours a day)?
  2. Can you stop watching TV when you want to?
  3. Could you go a week, or even a month, without watching TV?
  4. Have you made many fruitless attempts to reduce TV usage?
  5. Do you feel compelled to watch TV?
  6. Have you given up important social, family or occupational activities in order to watch TV?
  7. Is watching TV having harmful effects on your life (insomnia, physically, mentally or with your relationships)?

If you said yes to more than two of these questions, you may want to consider monitoring your TV usage or going without TV altogether.

Are you brave enough to share your answers? :)

I hate to admit it, but after answering those questions, I’m in the danger zone! Of the television I do watch, over half tends to be educational in nature (e.g. documentaries etc.) but that time would be better spent reading more books.

I read in a global study called “Playreport” initiated by IKEA (http://press.playreport.org/us/) that the vast majority of children (73%) would rather play with their parents than watch television. With so many single parents and families where both parents have to work, this becomes more and more of a challenge. I think when parents keep in mind that the television is no substitute (much less a replacement) for THEM, then at least they’ll be reminded to value the personal time with their children even more.
