Melaleuca athlete Nick Symmonds added yet another prestigious win to his résumé at the United States’ premier track and field meet, Nike Prefontaine Classic, in June. For Nick, who trains at Hayward Field and lives nearby, the pressure to perform for his adopted-hometown crowd was higher than ever before.
“People know that I have the potential to win this race now, so that’s a little bit of extra weight on my shoulders,” he says. “But I kind of respond to that. I like knowing people are here to see me run well—it helps me quite a bit.”
The gun went off and for the first 600 meters, Nick moved carefully into striking position. Around the final bend, with 150 meters left, Nick drove his way out of the pack toward the finish line.
“I wasn’t planning on taking the lead so early,” he says. “But when I saw the pace, I knew I could win it.”
Yet this win is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting outdoor track season. Nick’s focus now is preparing himself for the even-bigger races to come—including the World Championship in July.
“That’s been the [mode of operation] this year, work out as hard as you can [and then recover],” Nick says. “When it comes to recovery, Melaleuca’s Proflex™ bars and shakes make a big difference.”
